Lead is a toxic substance that may have lasting effects on a child. Children are especially susceptible to lead because their systems are not developed and they spend a greater time nearer the floor than an adult does simply because of their size. Lead dust settles to the floor where the children play. Exposure to lead can occur by breathing it in or ingesting it from fingers that have touched a leaded surface. Exposure of lead can occur from lead based paint in homes built before 1978, through soil, some imported candy, dishware and toys. Testing your child for lead is the only way to know if they have been exposed to it.
